At the mouth of loch craignish, but on the kilmartin side of the loch, is the farm of ardifour. One side of this farm faces loch craignish, and another loch crinan. Between the two lochs is a point where there are deep indentations in the rock, which bear some remote resemblance to the hoof-prints of a horse.
And, of course, at the other end of loch nell lies a serpent mound and a chambered cairn known as the ‘tomb of the giants and of the finn’. I’m beginning to wonder if people passing through there ever emerge again into the same world. Diarmuid’s pillar and cairn, from ‘loch etive and the sons of uisnach’ by dr r angus smith.

In 1879 smith, who was passionately devoted to archæology, and especially to scottish archæology, published anonymously a book on ‘loch etive,’ where he had spent many vacations, and on the legend of the ‘sons of uisnach;’ a second edition appeared with his name, posthumously, in 1885.
Deirdre was the daughter of the royal storyteller fedlimid mac daill. Before she was born, cathbad the chief druid at the court of conchobar mac nessa, king of ulster, prophesied that fedlimid's daughter would grow up to be very beautiful, but that kings and lords would go to war over her, much blood would be shed because of her, and ulster's three greatest warriors would be forced.

The great fort which is still called by their name, the fort of the sons of uisnach, is in a pleasant situation, and there are numerous proofs of some population all around. They fished as we hear, and they had a boat which took them up to the top of the loch when they wished to hunt among the wild hills of glen etive, and they left their names well remembered on the fields and the rocks.

In ‘loch etive and the sons of uisnach’ (1879), he recalls his visit to loch nell and it is to him that i owe my first discovery that the chambered cairn was known as “the tomb of the giants, and of the finn. ” but smith, obviously writing from a logical historian’s point of view, gives his opinion that there is “not even a faint.

Uisneachan—isle of the sons of uisneach- and there are many references in the numerous versions of the legend of deirdre, to the grassy meadow where she had a bower. There are still many sites around loch and glen etive named after deirdre and the sons of usnech. One rendering of the name loch etive is “the roaring loch”, probably because of the falls of lora at its mouth, a spectacular tidal waterfall of white rapids that appears in the book, and is indeed a sight to behold at full spate.
